Thank you for your
avid interest in the new IFPA Exercise
Management Certification. It is very gratifying
to see so many IFPA fitness training
professionals dedicated to learning the
intricacies of their craft.
From the questions
that are pouring in at the IFPA office, however,
there still appears to be some confusion of the
precise nature of exercise management and its
place in the personal fitness training
profession. Exercise management is a
profession, in and of itself, involved in the
application of exercise science and business
knowledge and principles to the design,
delivery, promotion and evaluation of physical
activity programs for the widest possible
audience. The personal fitness trainer is an
exercise professional who works with individual
clients to develop and maintain an ongoing,
individualized exercise program; the personal
fitness trainer may also exercise with the
client. The personal fitness trainer will
typically train individuals who may or may not
be “In shape”, but the individual will not have
any medical restrictions to exercise. The
exercise management professional has a far more
extensive education in exercise prescription
and programming. The exercise management professional
is able to develop an exercise program for a
client (or group of clients) designed to meet
the client’s health, fitness and performance, as
well as their other goals and needs. With 70%
of the American population projected to be obese
by 2010 and 50% of all American school age
children projected to be obese by 2012, it is
quickly becoming critical that all fitness
training professions acquire exercise management
knowledge, skills and abilities.
Some studies show
that as much as 92% of the American population
does not exercise enough to gain any health
benefits. This lack of physical activity has
led to the epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and
all forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD, CHD,
CAD, PVD, COPD and more), and an epidemic in
certain cancers. It is a frightening but all
too true statistic: Physically inactive people
are at increased risk of dying prematurely
compared with active people of similar
backgrounds.
The exercise
management professional has the requisite
knowledge, skill and ability in exercise
prescription and programming to design
appropriate fitness training programs for the
large segment of our population that suffers
from conditions or impairments in which physical
activity is beneficial in treatment or
prevention of further disease progression.
These conditions include (but are certainly not
limited to): coronary heart disease, including
after myocardial infarction, bypass surgery or
angioplasty; stroke, mild—moderate hypertension,
Type 2 diabetes, obesity, peripheral vascular
disease (PVD), arthritis, low back pain, cancer,
HIV/AIDS, asthma, neuromuscular and
musculoskeletal impairments, aging and more.
Each of these
conditions has very specific guidelines and
recommendations regarding mode, intensity,
duration, frequency, resistance training and
other components of fitness (the IFPA lists 10
components of fitness: strength, speed, power,
anaerobic endurance, aerobic endurance, agility,
balance, coordination, flexibility and body
composition). Depending on the precise
condition, one or more components of fitness may
become an activity component of the overall
program design.
The IFPA Exercise
Management Certification Course is designed to
provide the personal fitness training
professional with the knowledge of the specific
guidelines and recommendations for each of the
conditions listed above, to enable them to
develop the appropriate exercise program, with
the utmost degree of safety and effectiveness.
This course is
designed to give you the tools you need to be
part of the solution.
Sincerely,
Jim Bell, Ph.D

Successful completion of this course
leads to the designation:
IFPA-Certified in Exercise Management
The IFPA Exercise Management
Certification Course offers a complete, user-friendly
program for developing strategies for fitness and
exercise management that meets the needs of every
personal training client, from healthy, elite-level
athletes to clients with physical, pathological, social,
or psychological limitations.
This course provides an
interdisciplinary approach to developing, prescribing,
and delivering high-quality fitness and exercise
programs. In this course, you will explore how to
individualize fitness programs to encourage more people
to participate in regular physical activity and enjoy
the many health benefits. With 67% of the population
currently (as of 6/2006) categorized as morbidly obese,
obese, or overweight, the exercise management techniques
you will learn in this course are absolutely essential
in order to safely and effectively train these
special populations.
Even more critical is to
master the exercise management techniques provided in
this course. This will allow you to safely and
effectively manage the additional special population
groups, such as those with metabolic syndromes, which consist of
glucose intolerance, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension,
certain cancers, various cardiovascular and
cardio-respiratory diseases and more, all resulting from
the current Obesity Epidemic. Furthermore, the Obesity
Epidemic has created both a Diabetes Epidemic and a
Cancer Epidemic.
If you are a serious fitness
professional and desire to help more people, or if you crave
more knowledge and understanding of the personal
fitness training career, then this course is for you.
The goals
of this course are to help you:
1. Overcome the challenges
of encouraging people to become and remain active.
2. Develop programs
consistent with each person’s goals and capabilities.
3. Promote and maintain
successful physical activity programming in diverse
settings and situations.
4. Develop the professional
skills needed to manage exercise facilities and
employees.
5. Provide the knowledge,
skills, and abilities you need to work safely and
effectively with numerous special populations groups,
including: clients with cardiovascular,
cardio-respiratory, and metabolic diseases such as heart
disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, hypercholesterolemia,
hypertension, COPD, PAOD, CF, asthma, low back pain,
arthritis, osteoporosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord
injury, acquired brain injury, MS, Parkinson’s Disease,
chronic fatigue syndrome, and more.
The text is included and provides
excellent case studies to clearly illustrate key
concepts and terms in practical application scenarios
based on real-life experiences. Plus, glossaries at the
end of each chapter and at the back of the text keep
terms within easy reach and make referencing during
study quick and easy.
The study questions and real-life
activities in the text are great tools for independent
study. They’ll encourage you to seek further
information, develop practical skills, and observe
professional practice with first-hand insight. You’ll
also find suggested readings divided between cited
references and additional resources that will give you
the edge when studying topics in more depth and help you
along in your journey to becoming a “Master of Your
Craft”!
Successful completion of this course
will give you the knowledge and tools you need to help
the
young or old, healthy or infirm, develop and maintain
physically active lifestyles.
