"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."

- Buddha

Important notice to all IFPA certified Personal Fitness Trainers!  The following article presents an excellent reason why all your clients need to refer you to (and bring you) all their friends and family.  You are not doing your best for your clients' fat loss programs unless you include their friends and family, and this article proves it!!

Jim Bell, PhD, CEO IFPA

Personal Development

Associated Press

"A man's health can be judged by which he takes two at a time - pills or stairs."
Joan Welsh

(Excerpt from The IFPA Certified Consulting Specialist Course)

There is a great line in the movie Braveheart. Scottish hero, William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson), is in prison, about to be hideously tortured and killed by the English, and the English princess is pleading with him to tell his captors what they want so they will spare his life, but he refuses. The princess says, “If you don’t, you will die,” and William Wallace responds, “Every man dies, but not every man ever truly lives.”

This great line represents an even greater underlying philosophy, that living is much more than going to work, reading the paper, chatting with friends and co-workers about the latest gossip, celebrity scandals, sports and soap operas; having a few meals, watching TV, going to bed and starting the whole routine over again tomorrow!

There is another way of living … TRULY LIVING, expressed by the following mantra:

"I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon. I seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me -- not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any earthly master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say -- `This, with God's help, I have done.' All this is what it means to be an American."
--Dean Alfange

This mantra corresponds to the Principled Phase of personality in the Mind Map, and should be the mantra for every IFPA Certified Instructor!

If you have never tried living according to this mantra and have never tried the “TRULY LIVING PHILOSOPHY”, then please try this: Every morning when you get up, pick up your journal (Yes! Start a journal! On page one, write out your new mantra!), and read your mantra! Use the power of Intention to dedicate yourself to putting forth100% dedicated, committed, focused, disciplined effort into everything you do! Do the very best job you can, for everyone you can by following these 4 steps:
1) PLAN to do your very best in everything you do throughout the day.
2) BRIEF everyone involved in your career that you are committed to 100% effort and you want their comments on your performance.
3) EXECUTE with the goal of achieving perfection in everything you do. It may be impossible to achieve perfection, but you are much more likely to get there if you are focused on perfection!
4) DEBRIEF by asking for comments and criticism on your performance. Review your day in the evening before bed. Detail the comments and criticisms in your journal and make suggestions for your next PLAN (that will happen bright and early the following morning!).

TRULY LIVING encompasses all aspects of your life: mental, emotional, physical, financial, social, professional, personal, spiritual, artistic, etc. You must follow the 4 steps for each area of your life. Though this may seem tedious at first, the splendid results you achieve will quickly make this a habit! No delusions here; you may occasionally get knocked off-course. Unfortunately, “Life is what happens when you are making other plans!”

Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. For example: You determine that your IFPA Personal Fitness Training knowledge, skills, and abilities are very strong, but you are unable to get enough clients to meet your financial, professional and personal wants, needs and goals. You go to the IFPA website (www.ifpa-fitness.com) and discover one of the new IFPA Certification Courses: The IFPA Certified Fitness Consulting Specialist is precisely designed to teach you the knowledge, skills and abilities you need to provide you with a virtually unlimited supply of clients for the rest of your career. Is it enough to get the course? NO! Is it enough to read the text? NO! Is it enough to complete the 3 workbooks provided in the course? NO!

You need a PLAN! Your plan will involve completing the course, text and 3 Workbooks to the very best of your ability. Completing every exercise asked of you throughout the course to ensure you become an expert on Fitness Consulting, and continue to use the knowledge, skills and abilities you learn in this course to become both a Master Fitness Consultant and a master at your craft of Personal Fitness Training.

Each aspect of your life will take continuous practice and focus on the same 4 steps detailed above!

Reading and lifelong learning is also required to enable you to achieve your destiny. Every great person you can name had the habit of lifelong learning.

I wrote a FitBit article on August 18, 2003 (available on the IFPA website www.ifpa-fitness.com in the FitBit Archives under the “Resources” button) on Personal Development and listed what I considered to be some of the most valuable books available to start all IFPA Certified Instructors on the path to lifelong learning. I would add to that Recommended Reading List: The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (written in 1757 and I still consider it to be one of the greatest self-development books ever written), The Secret (No one can explain HOW it works, but it works!), and Power (the information contained here is priceless, but the historical references were absolutely fascinating).

You should also consider referencing a three part series I wrote on Personal Development; FitBits 1/7/15, 1/11/05, and 1/14/05, contained in the FitBit Archives.

I wish you the very best of luck on your “Journey of Success”.
Please enjoy the process!
Best regards,
Jim Bell, PhD

Announcement 2
There is another SCAM circulating through the IFPA Association! In different variations, a potential manager for a client sends you an international check for more money than your sessions, asks you to remit the balance and because of the delay in international banking, the check sent to you bounces like a “Super Ball” on steroids! Don’t fall for this scam, and report it to local and federal authorities!
