BARBARA MATCHETT (September 2019)

What made you choose a career in personal fitness training?

After my children were born, I didn’t want to go back to working in an office. The owner of the gym where I was working out approached me to get certified.

How long have you been a Personal Trainer?

Almost 24 years

What made you choose the IFPA?

I heard about it from another trainer. I was already certified in the industry and wanted to further my education.

If you have taken more than our PFT course, what has been your favorite certification course?

I’ve taken many, my favorite was the Advanced Personal Training Cert.    It was full of information and I enjoyed reading the book.

What are some adjectives your clients would use to describe you?

I think most will say I’m tough and very knowledgeable. I think they realize I will do everything in my power to help them….so they trust me.

What qualities set you apart from other personal trainers? Education? Experience?

It’s not just about the workout for me. It’s mind, body and soul. When you make that connection, the results are phenomenal. In addition to being a trainer, I’m a group exercise instructor and cycling instructor too. I also managed a fitness department for 12 years.

What is your best success story?

There are numerous. I trained a handicapped person for 10 years. Many strides were made in his quality of life and I will always remember that.

How has the PFT business changed since you started?

I really feel it hasn’t changed too much with the basics. New programs have been implemented and equipment is better. I love to learn something new.

How do you envision growing your personal training business?

Keep consistent in my beliefs and the training will always be exceptional.

What was the hardest challenge you had to overcome in your personal training career?

Moving to another gym was very difficult. Very hard to start over, but I did it and I’m proud of everything I’ve achieved in my career.

What is your best advice to someone just starting their career as a personal trainer?

Don’t think about selling a client training and see the $$. Think about making a difference in their life and the rest will follow.
